Misfuel risk High

UK Discovery Ingenium and earlier TD6/TD8 diesels are sensitive to petrol contamination. JLR common-rail systems can suffer HPFP and injector damage after a short run.

If the engine was not started

Do not start the engine or turn the ignition to RUN. Do not drive. Arrange GBIFDA-certified drainage before contamination reaches the high-pressure pump. Keep receipts for contaminated fuel disposal (Environment Agency / SEPA / NRW / NIEA duty of care).

If the engine was started

If the engine ran on petrol in a TDI, expect inspection of the high-pressure pump, injectors, fuel rail, filters, and low-pressure lines. JLR warranty excludes misfuel damage; follow TOPIx repair scope and consider insurer or Motor Ombudsman routes for disputes.

Access procedure

  1. Disconnect battery earth and confirm ignition off.
  2. Depressurise fuel system per TOPIx for your model year.
  3. Support vehicle and lower fuel tank or access pump module as specified (many JLR SUVs require tank drop).
  4. Drain contaminated fuel with a fuel cart into approved containers; label waste for hazardous waste consignment where required.
  5. Renew fuel filters and inspect pump unit seals.
  6. Refill with correct UK fuel grade; prime low-pressure feed.
  7. Clear DTCs, check for leaks, road test.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do if I put petrol in my Land Rover Discovery diesel?

Do not start the engine. Petrol in diesel destroys HPFP lubrication on common-rail TDIs. Call a GBIFDA-certified technician to extract fuel from the tank via the OEM access method and dispose of waste fuel legally.

Can I drive my Discovery to the garage after misfuelling?

No — even a few hundred metres can draw petrol into the high-pressure system. Recovery without starting is the safest option.

Where is the AdBlue filler on diesel Discovery?

AdBlue is separate from diesel — blue cap, smaller neck. Never add fuel to the AdBlue tank; contamination requires specialist cleaning per TOPIx.
