Compact SUV used as family and fleet car — frequent driver changes at petrol stations. PHEV models add risk of confusing AdBlue with washer fluid only (AdBlue not used on these petrol hybrids).
If the engine was not started
Do not start the engine. Leave the ignition off, avoid turning the key to ON (which can prime the fuel pump). Have the vehicle recovered to a workshop. Extract fuel from the tank and flush the fuel system using Toyota-prescribed access before attempting to start.
If the engine was started
If the engine was run on contaminated fuel, expect extended work: tank fuel extraction, new fuel filter(s), fuel line purge, and inspection of high-pressure pump and injectors per Toyota service data. Hybrid models may also need inverter cooling circuit checks if wrong fluid entered any reservoir.
Access procedure
- Disable HV system on hybrid/PHEV per ETM.
- Relieve fuel pressure and disconnect 12 V battery.
- Remove rear seat and module cover.
- Disconnect lines and electrical connector from module.
- Remove lock ring; lift module and drain.
- Inspect and flush if wrong fuel entered lines.
- Reinstall, refill correct petrol, prime and test.

Frequently asked questions
NX 450h+ — which tank was filled?
Only the petrol filler neck feeds the engine tank. If unsure after a misfuel event, do not start; drain the petrol tank before using EV mode with contaminated fuel in the line.
Can I use a fuel additive instead of draining?
Lexus does not approve additives as a substitute for draining wrong fuel. GBIFDA recovery requires tank evacuation and documented flush.
