Misfuel risk Moderate

Requires premium petrol (98 RON recommended). Misfuelling with diesel destroys the high-pressure pump if started.

If the engine was not started

Do not start the engine. Leave the ignition off, avoid turning the key to ON (which can prime the fuel pump). Have the vehicle recovered to a workshop. Extract fuel from the tank and flush the fuel system using Toyota-prescribed access before attempting to start.

If the engine was started

If the engine was run on contaminated fuel, expect extended work: tank fuel extraction, new fuel filter(s), fuel line purge, and inspection of high-pressure pump and injectors per Toyota service data. Hybrid models may also need inverter cooling circuit checks if wrong fluid entered any reservoir.

Access procedure

  1. Depressurise fuel system.
  2. Disconnect battery.
  3. Remove rear seat and access cover.
  4. Disconnect lines and module connector.
  5. Remove lock ring; drain tank.
  6. Refill with correct high-octane petrol.
  7. Check for leaks and DTCs before driving.

Frequently asked questions

I put standard 95 petrol in my GR86 after a misfuel recovery — is that OK?

Toyota recommends 98 RON. After a contamination event, use the grade on the filler label; sustained use of lower RON may cause knock on this engine.

Diesel in the tank — can I flush without dropping the tank?

Module access drainage is the prescribed path; full tank drop is rarely needed on this platform if the tank interior is clean after suction.
