⚠️ Toyota manufacturer position

Bus operators must follow Toyota commercial workshop manual for tank access — often underfloor or chassis-mounted tank with limited interior access.

Misfuel risk Moderate

Commercial drivers filling at unfamiliar sites; petrol in diesel is catastrophic for minibus fleets.

If the engine was not started

Do not start the engine. Leave the ignition off, avoid turning the key to ON (which can prime the fuel pump). Have the vehicle recovered to a workshop. Extract fuel from the tank and flush the fuel system using Toyota-prescribed access before attempting to start.

If the engine was started

If the engine was run on contaminated fuel, expect extended work: tank fuel extraction, new fuel filter(s), fuel line purge, and inspection of high-pressure pump and injectors per Toyota service data. Hybrid models may also need inverter cooling circuit checks if wrong fluid entered any reservoir.

Access procedure

  1. Park safely; isolate battery; display workshop safety signage.
  2. Identify diesel vs AdBlue fillers before pumping.
  3. Use approved extraction or drain plug where fitted.
  4. If tank drop required, support chassis per manual.
  5. Replace primary and secondary filters after contamination.
  6. Bleed fuel system before passenger service.
  7. Record waste fuel consignment note under UK duty of care.

Frequently asked questions

Coaster petrol misfuel — is it possible?

UK Coasters are diesel; petrol in the diesel tank is the realistic misfuel scenario.

Can we drain through the filler on a Coaster?

Anti-siphon and tank depth usually prohibit this — use chassis access or professional extraction.
