Misfuel risk Moderate

UK Previas are petrol-only; diesel misfuel is unlikely due to filler neck size. Wrong-grade petrol or contaminated fuel is the usual issue on ageing UK examples still in use.

If the engine was not started

Drain incorrect or contaminated petrol from the tank and lines without starting. Replace fuel filter if water or wrong additive is suspected.

If the engine was started

If the engine ran on heavily contaminated fuel, inspect injectors and fuel rail; flush lines and replace filter per Toyota guidance.

Access procedure

  1. Disconnect the battery; relieve fuel pressure via pump relay and brief crank if procedure allows
  2. Access the fuel pump module per Toyota workshop manual (rear interior floor on many XR20)
  3. Disconnect electrical connector and quick-release fuel lines with appropriate tools
  4. Remove lock ring and extract pump/sender assembly
  5. Drain contaminated petrol; inspect tank interior through pump opening
  6. Replace pump O-ring; reconnect lines and test for leaks before refuelling with correct grade

Frequently asked questions

Can I put diesel in a Toyota Previa?

UK-market Previas sold new were petrol. The diesel nozzle should not fit, but never force a nozzle. If any wrong fuel enters the tank, do not start the engine and arrange draining.

Where is the fuel pump on a Previa?

Most generations use an in-tank pump accessed from inside the vehicle floor. Follow Toyota service information for your chassis code.

Is the Previa still common in the UK?

New sales ended years ago, but many remain in service. Misfuel incidents are less frequent than on modern diesel vans but still require proper draining and waste duty of care.

Does Toyota cover fuel contamination under warranty?

No — contamination and misfuelling are excluded as misuse or external factors.
