⚠️ Lexus manufacturer position

Lexus requires fuel-module removal or approved extraction for tank evacuation. Misfuel damage is excluded from warranty. Follow ETM fuel tank module removal before applying suction through the module opening.

Misfuel risk Moderate

UK ES is mainly ES 300h hybrid with a petrol tank. Drivers hiring or sharing cars may select the wrong grade at the pump; diesel in petrol is uncommon but serious if the engine is cranked.

If the engine was not started

Do not start the engine. Leave the ignition off, avoid turning the key to ON (which can prime the fuel pump). Have the vehicle recovered to a workshop. Extract fuel from the tank and flush the fuel system using Toyota-prescribed access before attempting to start.

If the engine was started

If the engine was run on contaminated fuel, expect extended work: tank fuel extraction, new fuel filter(s), fuel line purge, and inspection of high-pressure pump and injectors per Toyota service data. Hybrid models may also need inverter cooling circuit checks if wrong fluid entered any reservoir.

Access procedure

  1. Relieve fuel pressure per ETM (remove pump fuse/relay, crank briefly).
  2. Disconnect 12 V battery; hybrid — follow high-voltage disable before rear-seat trim.
  3. Remove rear seat cushion and module access cover.
  4. Disconnect wiring and quick-connect fuel lines from the module.
  5. Release lock ring and lift module; extract fuel from tank via module port.
  6. Inspect tank interior; replace module O-ring.
  7. Refill with correct petrol grade, prime per ETM, check for leaks before road test.

Frequently asked questions

What if I put diesel in my Lexus ES 300h?

Do not start the hybrid system. Drain the petrol tank completely, replace the fuel filter, and flush lines before cranking. Running can contaminate the hybrid engine and catalyst.

Can I siphon a Lexus ES through the filler neck?

No. The anti-siphon valve blocks hoses. Use module removal or workshop extraction equipment through the approved access point.
