⚠️ Toyota manufacturer position

Toyota prescribes fuel pump access panel removal under the rear seat on most Prius generations. Misfuelling is warranty-excluded misuse. Disable hybrid READY and follow high-voltage safety precautions in workshop manuals.

Misfuel risk Low

Prius is petrol-only in the UK. Diesel misfuel is physically unlikely. Risk is mainly contaminated petrol, water ingress, or hybrid auto-start during service.

If the engine was not started

Drain wrong or contaminated petrol without entering READY. Replace fuel filter if debris or water is present.

If the engine was started

If the engine ran on bad petrol, inspect injectors and hybrid fuel strategy faults stored in ECU; clear codes after repair per Toyota.

Access procedure

  1. Ensure hybrid system is off (READY off); remove smart key from vehicle
  2. Disconnect 12 V battery; relieve fuel pressure per Toyota procedure
  3. Remove rear seat cushion and access panel screws
  4. Disconnect pump connector and fuel lines; remove lock ring
  5. Extract pump module and drain contaminated petrol
  6. Inspect tank; reinstall with new O-ring
  7. Reconnect battery; prime line; check for leaks before READY

Frequently asked questions

Can you put diesel in a Prius?

No — UK Prius models use petrol only. The diesel nozzle should not fit. If any diesel enters the tank, do not start the car and drain immediately.

Where is the fuel pump access on a Prius?

Typically under the rear seat via a screwed access panel. This is Toyota Method A on GBIFDA charts.

Should the hybrid be in READY during fuel work?

No. Keep READY off so the petrol engine does not auto-start during draining or line disconnection.

Is wrong fuel covered by Toyota hybrid warranty?

No. Incorrect fuel is excluded; hybrid components are only covered for defects, not contamination.
